How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe Around Your Personal Colors

They almost never start with the one thing that actually decides whether any of those pieces work on you: your colors. Build a capsule around the wrong palette and you still end up with a closet full of “fine” clothes you quietly reach past every morning. The 3-Layer Color Formula

Instead of picking pieces one at a time, divide your capsule into three color layers. This is the structure we walk clients through after every session at Soori Studio:

Anchors (about 60% of the capsule) — the deepest, most versatile neutrals in your palette. Not “neutral” in general (black, white, navy, beige) but your specific version of them — the exact depth and undertone that came back from your draping session.
Connectors (about 30%) — the mid-tone colors in your palette that bridge your anchors and your boldest pieces. These are what make separates feel like they were bought as a set, even when they weren't.
Accents (about 10%) — your most saturated, signature colors. Used sparingly — a blazer, a bag, a scarf — these are what people actually remember about how you looked.

Building Your Capsule, Step by Step

Start from the bottom half. Choose 2–3 trousers, a skirt, or denim in your truest anchor neutral — this is the foundation everything else has to match.
Add anchor tops in the same 60% palette so any top pairs with any bottom without a second thought.
Pick one connector color and build two pieces around it — a cardigan, a dress, a jacket — to bridge your anchors toward something bolder.
Choose exactly one accent color for statement pieces. One is a focal point; three competing accents just looks busy, regardless of how flattering each one is alone.
Before buying anything new, hold it against three pieces you already own. If it doesn't visually pair with at least three, it doesn't earn a place in the capsule — no matter how much you like it on the hanger.
Apply the rule of 3 going forward: nothing new joins the capsule unless it can be worn at least three different ways with what's already there.

Mistakes Even Color-Savvy People Make

Getting the hue right but the depth wrong — a “correct” blue that's two shades too bright or too muted for your contrast level will still look slightly off, even though it's technically “your color.”
Treating warm vs. cool as the whole answer. Two people can share the same undertone and still need completely different capsules once depth and clarity are factored in.
Shopping from inspiration photos instead of your own results. A capsule board made for someone else's coloring will always pull you back toward pieces that don't actually suit you.
